Fire shuts down Arkansas Nuclear One

A reactor of a nuclear power plant in the central United States was shut down Monday after a fire in the site electrical circuit.
“The fire is extinguished. There are no injured and no security threat,” said an AFP spokesman in a statement for Arkansas Nuclear One, located in Russellville, Arkansas.
The fire, which broke out Monday morning, damaged an electric transformer and led to the decommissioning of one of the two reactors at the plant operated by the US company Entergy, the statement said. The causes of the accident have not been specified.
The other reactor on the site has not been affected and remains in service, the statement added.
Commissioned in 1974, the Central Arkansas Nuclear One produces over 1,820 MW and provides about 30% of the energy needed for the entire state with nearly three million people.
