EDM to cut power supply to Swaziland

Mozambique’s EDM no longer guarantees to supply Swaziland with electricity due to EDM supplying more power to its own people, according to Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC) acting Managing Director Meshack Kunene.
“Our supply from EDM is shrinking. There is power deficit in Swaziland thus we must move to establishing a thermal power station. EDM is no longer guaranteed to supply Swaziland. Their people and economy is growing,” he said.
The acting MD added that the power utility was confronted with serious copper theft in the country, especially around Matsapha. Apparently, the area had two transformers but they were vandalised by unknown people who were after copper.
If the Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC) is granted a portion of the fund it has applied for from the Swaziland Energy Regulatory Authority (SERA), it will embark on projects estimated to cost over E 70 million.
SEC acting Managing Director Meshack Kunene said amongst the projects is a new substation at Siphofaneni valued at E 15 million and another at KaLanga in Siteki costing E 29.3 million.
He added that E 15 million would be used for a line importing Eskom’s electricity from Normandie to Mahamba, which carries 132 kV of power.
Kunene said that SEC will invest about E11.2 million to replace old transformers and system spares, adding that some electricity transformers date from 1963 and need replacement.
Finally, the underground cables will be replaced at the Manzini central business district at E1.5 million cost.
