The Ivory Coast Electricity Company – Co. (Compagnie ivoirienne d’Électricité – Cie) could be paying out compensations due to long and freqent power cuts in Abidjan, particularly Koumassi and Marcory.

On the 9th December, 90/15 kV power transformer No. 3 failed in Koumassi and caused significant reduction of power supply to Abidjan. Before the Co. had even managed to repair the damage on the 14th and 15th December, another incident occured.

According to Co., an electric cable broke and the double 90kV line was damaged. This caused additional disruptions in power supply to Abidjan. As a consequence, Plateau, Cocody and  many other communes were affected along with Marcory (Zone 4A , Zone 4C, Residential Centre, GFCI, Sicogi , Poto -Poto); Koumassi (Kankankoura , Sogefiha, Nord-Est, Centre, Sicogi) and Port -Bouët (Adjouffou , Belle Ville, Route de Bassam).

Michel A. who works in agriculture said: “When power goes out, it’s always traumatic. We’re afraid for our lives, especially when darkness settles in but the truth is, even in the morning, the consequences are severe. All the food from the freezer is wasted, the data from our electronic devices gets lost, etc. The biggest victims are the businesses because all their work is interrupted. Port operating companies that cooperate with many foreign partners are blocked; in hospitals, a disaster can happen even when power is interrupted for one minute; Restaurants and hotels have to close for the night. This proves a serious incompetence of the authorities who absolutely must fix the problem.”

“Recent power cuts have affected our computers, the hard drives are damaged,” said an office worker.

The investigation regarding the damage caused by power cuts will be conducted by the authorities. A source from the Ministry of Energy claimed that the Co. has already compensated some of its consumers. The ones who have not been compensated yet will be able to claim free of charge with the consumer rights association’s assistance.
