A fire of an underground transformer further complicated the power supply service in Neuquén, Argentina. The explosion of the CALF Cooperative transformer left the city centre in the dark last night.

A part of the city centre was left without power throughout the day while the utility company rotated power outages to prevent the system from collapsing.

The relentless heat is thought to be the main problem in the region. The highest temperature was recorded on Monday and yesterday an underground transformer, located at Carlos H. Rodríguez and Santiago del Este, caught on fire due to high power demand.

According to reports from the Cooperative, the replacement of the equipment and wiring affected the operation of the service throughout the day yesterday.

CALF President, Marcos Silva, regarded yesterday’s incident as an overdue energy supply problem in the Neuquén province which has a serious lack of investment.

“The problem is in generation. Electricity supply  network is in a desperate need of updating. We have to build more power plants and improve transport. If you do not generate enough and transport fails, the distributors have problems,” he added .
