Egypt, Cairo: Three international companies will present their technical proposals to the Egyptian and Saudi Arabian ministries of electricity next month, in a bid to build three transformer stations to create an electrical interconnection project between the two countries.

Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) agreed with Saudi Arabia to issue a limited tender for the three transformer stations to three companies: Siemens, Alstom, and ABB, reports Daily News Egypt.

Construction of the Nabq City transformer station, which is to be the main station in the project, has already been approved by Egypt’s Ministry of Environment.

The project will be carried out in five packages, the first including building of two HVDC 500 kV converter stations with power transformers and associated electrical equipment in Badr city, Saudi Arabia.

In the final stage the switching stations of the two states will be connected using ground cables laid along Egyptian and Saudi territories, as well as a 16 km marine cable of 500 kV traveling through Al-Aqba Gulf.

The Egypt-Saudi Arabia electricity interconnection project should allow for the electric capacity exchange of more than 3,000 MW during peak hours.
