Japan, Tokyo: IEEE Standards Association, a global standards development organisation has approved IEEE Std™ C57.163, a standard providing a guide for establishing power transformer capability while under geomagnetic disturbances.

The guide describes effects of geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) on power transformers when there is a presence of geo-magnetically induced current (GIC) in the power transformer neutral.

It establishes specification parameters and performance characteristics for power transformers to minimise the risk and impact when GIC is present in the power system and provides background that can help evaluate the effect of GIC on a power transformer design and its GIC capability.

The standard has been developed by the IEEE Power and Energy Society’s Transformer Committee.
