Canada, British Columbia: Canadian North Shore in British Columbia has been hit by a series of substation explosions which left thousands of B.C. Hydro customers without power.

The first blackouts began yesterday afternoon and the outages continued to escalate into the evening. Nearly 20,000 customers in West Vancouver and particularly North Vancouver remained without power.

The bright flashes of blue light in the sky allegedly coming from exploding transformers could be seen across Burrard Inlet in downtown Vancouver, reports Vancity Buzz.

High winds throughout the day caused a number of power outages across the entire region. Earlier in the day, 40,000 customers in the Lower Mainland were without power, and outages south of the Inlet continued into the evening.
