USA, North Carolina: ABB has officially launched a new initiative that will support electrical utilities in the United States and address U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) concerns around physical security for the power grid’s most critical transmission and distribution substations and transformers.

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s (NERC) recently issued the Critical Infrastructure Protection order, which requires transmission owners to assess the vulnerability of critical substations and develop and implement security plans. The implementation schedule for this order started in October 2015 and requires completion by August 2016.

ABB’s initiative covers five strategic elements utilities should consider when developing their plans of substation physical security and grid resiliency, including assessment, hardening, monitoring, rapid repair and rapid replacement.
