ABB has won an order worth around $ 37 million from PSE S.A., Poland’s state owned transmission system operator, to deliver 12 power transformers as part of an initiative to strengthen the national grid.

ABB has a well-established power track record in Poland and has commissioned about 60 ABB power transformers in recent years.

“This order reaffirms our market penetration strategy as we deliver more to existing customers,” said ABB Chief Executive Officer Ulrich Spiesshofer. ”In line with our ‘in country for country’ approach, the transformers will be produced in Poland where we have an extensive manufacturing footprint.”

ABB will design, supply, install and commission the transformers which range in capacity from 275 to 500 MVA and weigh close to 360 metric tons each. They will be installed in 11 substations across the country between 2014 and 2017. Some of the substations are new installations while others are being upgraded.

“These best-in-class power transformers with low operating noise levels and reduced no-load and on-load losses will enable efficient transmission of electricity, enhance grid reliability and improve power security,” said Bernhard Jucker, head of ABB’s Power Products division. “We are pleased to continue supporting the effort to strengthen Poland’s power infrastructure.”

Transformers are integral components of an electrical grid, and essential for the efficient and safe conversion of electricity between diverse voltage systems. ABB’s transformer portfolio includes power transformers rated up to 1,200 kV, dry and liquid-distribution transformers, traction and special application transformers as well as related services and components.
