Following damage caused by yesterday’s storms, the ESB said that a large transformer in Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland had been irreparably damaged following a lightning strike.

By last night, the ESB had restored power to some 30,000 homes following damage from the storms but this morning, approximately 100 homes in the area were still without power.

During the repairs mission, an additional fault on a low number of low voltage transformers was discovered and this left a number of households without power.

This morning, ESB staff were out again in a bid to repair the faults and have full power restored.

Last night’s restoration saw ESB crews working Donegal, Cork, Clare and other counties throughout the country.

Mike Fitzgerald, manager of customer services at ESB Netowrks, apologised to customers and said they were doing all they could to restore power. “ESB Networks would like to apologise to customers who are without supply, especially on this Christmas Day morning, and thank them for their patience.“
