Germany: Siemens Traction Transformers has received an order to manufacture and deliver traction transformers for 83 trains for Rhine-Ruhr Express (RRX) in Germany to launch the new Desiro HC platform.

The first Desiro HC (high capacity) transformer is scheduled for shipment in January 2017, Siemens announced in a statement.

The complete series will be manufactured in the Nuremberg factory and will ship by 2020.

Two transformers with four traction windings each are installed on the roofs of the two end cars of each train. The train’s lightweight construction and the transformer’s aerodynamic design help reduce the total energy consumption.

Dr. Berthold Sedlmaier, CEO of Traction Transformers, commented on the contract award: “Our transformer was developed specifically to meet the requirements of the new generation of regional trains, the Desiro HC in this case. There is even room for improvement if necessary, for example where energy efficiency is concerned.”
