South Africa is considering imposing emergency tariffs on some steel imports, according to a filing to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) published on Monday, reports BDlive.

South Africa’s steel industry body requested the temporary trade barrier because a surge in import volumes had caused the industry “serious injury” affecting sales, output, market share and capacity utilisation, the filing said.

However, the emergency tariff would not apply to imports of silicon electrical steel, according to BDlive.
