USA, New Mexico: Under an interagency agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has awarded a design-build substation contract at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to Gardner Zemke Mechanical and Electrical Contractors of Albuquerque.

Under the $13.1 million contract, Gardner Zemke will design and build a 115 kV substation, with the main power transformer, four current transformers and other necessary electrical equipment, adjacent to an existing substation at LANL’s TA-3 facility, reports Los Alamos Daily Post.

As the existing substation is over 50 years old, the new substation is expected to enhance LANL operations and ensure sufficient electrical capacity to support Los Alamos County operations.

The completion of the project is scheduled for late 2018.
