Kansas City Power & Light Co. electrical transformer weighing nearly 228,000 kg, will be moved Thursday night and Friday morning. The heavy transport will require the closure of two interstate highways.

The transformer will connect to the Iatan power plant to increase reliability and reduce congestion on electrical transmission lines. Missouri Department of Transportation has hired Edwards Moving & Rigging Inc. to conduct the move of the load which weighs 330,000 kg with the trailer.

The transformer has been transported to Liberty by rail, according to Chuck Caisley, a spokesman for KCP&L. He added that transformers like this generally cost between $ 2 million and $ 4 million.

“And they just happen to be very big and very heavy and very expensive,” Caisley said, “so you want to make sure that nobody runs into them and that you’ve got plenty of room. That’s why it moves very slowly.”
