ABB to supply 72 traction transformers for high-speed rail line in Saudi Arabia

ABB will supply 72 traction transformer sets to power trains on a new desert railway between Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia. The 450-km Haramain high-speed railway will enable the pilgrims to travel between the two holy cities more efficiently.

ABB will supply 72 traction transformer sets to power trains on a new desert railway between Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia. The 450-km Haramain high-speed railway will enable the pilgrims to travel between the two holy cities more efficiently. Approximately 3 million passengers will use the new line every year.

ABB will manufacture 72 traction transformer sets with two spare sets and 72 battery charges to train builder Talgo supplying 35 new 300 km/h high-speed trains for the line which will be delivered by the end of 2014 for testing.

According to ABB, their traction transformers have been designed to cope with the temperatures ranging from -20 to over 55 degrees Celsius.

Markus Heimbach, head of ABB’s Transformers business, said: “We are proud to be able to provide our advanced and proven technology to this prestigious rail project.”
