USA, Pennsylvania: FirstEnergy Corp continues its efforts to replace a transformer at the Beaver Valley nuclear power plant, writes Reuters.
The 892-megawatt Unit 1 at the nuclear power plant shut on the 6th January due to a transformer failure. At the time, FirstEnergy stated that as a consequence, the outage is expected to last less than 30 days.
“We are well into the replacement process. This is a large component that requires some time to replace,” said spokeswoman Jennifer Young, according to Reuters.
Neil Sheehan, a spokesman at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said “Work is continuing on the installation and testing of the new transformer … While the work may be taking slightly longer than anticipated, the delays would not be considered significant.” He added, “This type of replacement schedule is in line with what we have seen at other plant sites.”
According to the NRC, FirstEnergy had two spare transformers at Beaver Valley (a new one and a refurbished one) and decided to install the new, unused transformer because the used one would have required additional refurbishment work and prolonged the whole process.
On Friday, the NRC reported that Beaver Valley Unit 2 was operating at full power in the morning.
