Canada, Ontario: The Ontario government has approved the construction of a wind farm on Amherst Island in Lake Ontario, which is internationally designated as an Important Bird Area, and known as the owl capital of North America.

The wind farm will consist of 27 giant turbines, a substation with power transformers and associated electrical equipment, and collector lines, reports The Whig.

Due to the importance of this nature reserve, the project has stirred a lot of commotion among the Canadian conservation societies, who fear that the development might damage or destroy the Island’s wildlife habitat.
