Metro-North $ 10 million dollar power transformer upgrade to start today

USA, Connecticut: Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced yesterday that the Connecticut Department of Transportation will get a $ 10 million dollar power supply upgrade for Metro-North Railroad’s New Haven Line.
According to the contract, Connecticut Light and Power will install new power transformers replacing four old ones at Cos Cob, Greenwich. The new transformers will almost double the capacity of the two west ones from 16 MW to 30 MW allow significant power increase to the New Haven Line, writes EyeWitnessNews3.
The upgrade of the first transformer is scheduled to begin today. It is expected to be completed within 16 days. The second transformer will be replaced as soon as the installation of the first one is complete and it is expected to be operating by mid-March.
Since only one transformer will be replaced at a time, the east and west substations will provide service, according to ConnDOT, when the first transformer is de-energised for replacement. A second fully active emergency transformer will be on standby.
Metro-North’s New Haven Line is the busiest single rail line in the United States, according to ConnDOT carrying over 106,000 passengers every day.
