Nepal, Kathmandu: NEA (The Nepal Electricity Authority) has stopped installing new electricity lines to small and medium scale factories for the past couple of months due to shortage of power transformers.

NEA has recently initiated power transformer procurement for 1,200 transformers after a long delay but the process itself will take at least five months to complete. Previous power transformer procurement between 2008 and 2011 was controversial after substandard power transformers had been delivered.

“The shortage of transformers has affected the process to install electricity lines in new industries, especially small and medium scale industries”, said Ram Chandra Pandey, chief of Distribution and Consumer Services Department of NEA.

Factories have been demanding power transformers from the NEA and complaining of the government’s failure to keep their promises.

NEA provides power transformers of up to 50 KVA to industries. “We are forced to postpone the process of connecting new lines for industries due to shortage of transformers,” said Pandey and added that the lines will be connected after mid-June when new transformers are delivered.
