France, Arras: At the citadel, the reconstruction of the power network was celebrated with the a spectacular operation – a burial of a transformer.

la-voix-du-nord-403x303The Urban Community of Arras (CUA) took possession of the citadel five years ago and found a number of defects in the network which caused electricity consumption to soar. It was therefore necessary to reconstruct the network.

ERDF conducted the repairs, installing a power transformer between the l’Équerre and Cantine areas, and 2,100 m of medium voltage (15,000 V) and 2200 m of low voltage cables.

The construction of the new network for power supply to the south of the citadel ended with the installation of a new transformer. CUA and ERDF intended to install the new transformer inside the building (used by the security during the Main Square Festival) but because they wanted to restore the citadel to its 1900s appearance, the technical constraints were too great. The final solution was to bury the transformer in the vault.

“This is not the most economical, but most favorable solution to the landscape”, said  Yves Vanlerberghe, deputy regional director of ERDF.

The new transformer had been ordered from Ormazabal in Spain and it was delivered to Arras Monday night. On Tuesday, a crane lifting 125 tonnes was required to move the transformer next to the 80 m3 hole. The underground transformer was put into service on Tuesday. Only two metal grids and a service hatch are now visible on the site.

The total cost of the electrical network reconstruction is € 570,000.
