USA, California: FBI said on Friday it could not rule out that the San Jose attack on the power transformers last year was an act of terrorism.

sanjose-430x250Shooters caused extensive damage to 17 power transformers using semiautomatic weapons on the 16th April 2013. A potentially disastrous blackout was avoided in the area which is home to some of the biggest technology companies.

This week, Jon Wellinghoff, Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission at the time, said the shooters were obviously well trained and tried their best to cause major damage.

“It would not be that hard to bring down the entire region west of the Rockies if you, in fact, had a co-ordinated attack like this against a number of substations.” said  Wellinghoff.

“I cannot tell you 100 % that this is not terrorism,” Peter D. Lee of the FBI’s San Francisco field office said. “However, there are certain other things that we take into consideration when we investigate whether it is criminal or national-security related… And we are treating it as a criminal matter.”
