Libya, Sebha: Sebha West power station caught fire in the early hours Monday and the local firefighters struggled to extinguish it.

Hammed Al-Mabrouk told the Libya Herald that the flames engulfed the 63 MW transformer and destroyed it completely. A new power transformer is needed urgently. “These types of transformers may not be available in the South, so how quickly we can get the station running again depends on when GECOL send us a replacement”, said Ghaith Ali, assistant manager of electrical networks at the station.

The cause of the incident is still unknown.“It is hard to say whether the fire was deliberate or caused by a random bullet”, he said.

As the power station supplies around 80 % consumers in Sebha, the majority was initially left with no power. They are now being supplied by other power stations but, until a new transformer is installed, frequent outages are expected.
