India, Bangalore: ABB has won orders worth Rs 310 crore (approx. $ 50 million) from Powergrid (state-run Power Grid Corporation of India) to supply power transformers and shunt reactors to improve and strengthen the high voltage transmission grid.

ABB will install 14 high voltage single-phase autotransformers of 500 MVA and 765 kV at the substations currently under construction in Kanpur and Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

In order to meet the increasing demand in the northern region, the new substations will receive power from Jharkhand and West Bengal and distribute it across Uttar Pradesh.

“The orders were booked in fourth quarter of 2013 and first quarter to supply power transformers and shunt reactors for substations being built to support voltage transmission grid development.” the ABB Indian subsidiary stated.

“The transformers and shunt reactors will enhance grid reliability and ensure efficiency with reduced life-cycle costs. They will also strengthen the country’s transmission infrastructure and improve power reliability.” said Bernhard Jucker, ABB’s power products division.
