USA, Virginia: Dominion Virginia Power, the state’s largest electricity supplier, is planning to spend up to $ 500 million within the next decade to strengthen its power transformer substations against armed assaults and natural disasters, and stockpile crucial equipment.

The investments come as a response to the devastation by 2012 Superstorm Sandy and a shooting attack last April on the Pacific Gas and Electric Co. Metcalf substation.

Dominion’s plan, described in the Times-Dispatch of Richmond, is to build steel perimeter barriers around selected substations, which will be designed to resist being cut through or climbed over. Security systems will also be added to control access and monitor facilities.

There are also plans to spend about $ 80 million to create a new operations centre, scheduled to be opened in 2017. Dominion intends to improve its network’s reliability and resiliency, and strengthen its defenses against outside attack.
