USA, Kansas: This weekend, a 331-tonne gigantic power transformer was moved at slow pace along county roads near Topeka. It started its 10-mile journey early Saturday.

The massive transformer was 13 m long, 7.3 m wide and 9 m tall, and it arrived by train in Pauline on Wednesday. Then a trailer was built and the transformer was moved Saturday to a substation on S.W. Auburn Road.

The transport is part of the more than $ 150 million investment by Westar Energy to modernise the electrical grid in Topeka and Shawnee County.

“As the needs of our customers continue to grow and expand, we must ensure we have a power delivery system in place to provide safe, reliable service. The electricity needs of the city and our customers have dramatically changed and our expectations for reliability have, too.” said Doug Sterbenz, Westar Energy executive vice president and chief operating officer.

The transformer is due to be installed in a substation under construction near S.W. 37th and Auburn Road, replacing a smaller nearby substation built in the 1950s. The new substation has been designed to allow for expansion during the next few decades.
