United Kingdom, Gloucestershire: A house-sized power transformer was delivered to National Grid’s Walham substation recently, ending its 5,500 mile journey.

A 170-tonne power transformer started its journey in South Korea where it was built, writes South West Business. The transformer is 9 m long and 5 m wide, and it arrived by ship at Sharpness Docks on the River Severn where it was lifted onto a low-loader for the final 34-mile trip by road.

The trailer carrying the transformer travelled at about 12 to 20 miles an hour and caused tailbacks on the M5. National Grid coordinated the move with heavy transport specialists Allelys Heavy Haulage.

National Grid senior project manager Matthew Ray said: “This transformer project is a vital investment in our energy network and will play an important role in helping us maintain the future supply of electricity to a large local area.”
