United Kingdom, Staffordshire: Alstom has invested over € 25 million ($ 34 million) in an old machine shop transforming it into a state-of-the art manufacturing facility for the next generation of HVDC power transformers.

Alstom adopted flow-line production at its new centre which includes voltage source converter (VSC) testing facility. The facility enables the development and long-term testing of the VSC converter technology, writes The Sentinel.

James Wright, VSC industrialisation director, said: “Last year we celebrated our 50th year as well as the official opening of this facility which has been here about two years now. But there are new people and new competition which want to come into this market and that puts the pressure on us to differentiate ourselves through investment and the development of new technology. HVDC is the main player in our growth strategy.“

“It was a big success for us to go to our owners with our business case and validate the UK as the right place to build this VSC technology.“ he added.

The facility has almost completed a contract for the Swedish utility Svenska Kraftnät. Alstom is supplying HVDC converter stations for Barkeryd in central Sweden to Hurva in southern Sweden.
