USA, Maine: A power transformer exploded at a Central Maine Power (CMP) substation in Portland and caused an outage for several hours on Sunday.

Around 2.30 p.m. CMP confirmed a power transformer failed and caused around 330 outages in Cumberland County, writes WCSH6.

“I was sitting up here doing invoices and heard a big boom so I look out the window and one of the transformers, I guess, was shooting flames so I called 911.“ said Brittany Costa of Happy Trails Daycare & Boarding near the substation.

The fire at the substation was confirmed by the Portland Fire Department. The power transformer could be seen disconnected and dangling from the substation. Tom DePeter of Central Maine Power said: “We just isolated the piece of equipment that failed so we could then restore power to the rest of the customers.”
