USA, Arizona: Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) and Southline Transmission will jointly develop a 579 km transmission line project that will stretch between southern New Mexico and southern Arizona.

The Southline Transmission project is a 1 GW transmission line which will involve upgrades to the existing electrical infrastructure of WAPA and construction of new infrastructure, including a substation northwest of Tucson, Arizona, reports EBR.

Construction is expected to commence in late 2018, with transmission operations to begin in a phased manner starting from 2020.

The project is expected to boost reliability and help in removing transmission congestion in the WAPA’s Desert Southwest Region.
