Johannesburg invests $74.7M to upgrade Sebenza substation
South Africa, Johannesburg: The City of Johannesburg has invested close to $75 million to make the necessary upgrades to the Sebenza substation and minimise the effects of power outages.
South Africa, Johannesburg: The City of Johannesburg has invested close to $75 million to make the necessary upgrades to the Sebenza substation and minimise the effects of power outages.
The upgrades at Sebenza are currently underway, with a new second power transformer already installed and online, which has doubled the electricity output of the facility, reports Joburg.
A third transformer will also be installed to strengthen the stability of the electricity grid throughout the City.
Inspecting the progress at Sebenza Substation Mayor of the City of Joburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba, said: “About 27% of the City’s bulk transformers have been running past their useful lifespan, producing a staggering 177,000 low voltage outages in 2017/18.”
According to Mayor, the Sebenza project is a priority in the City’s 2018/19 budget.
