Part of Johannesburg without power after Allandale substation fire

On Thursday, Johannesburg's electricity provider City Power said the Allandale substation remained under total shutdown after it ignited on Wednesday.

South Africa, Johannesburg: On Thursday, Johannesburg’s electricity provider City Power said the Allandale substation remained under total shutdown after it ignited on Wednesday.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena explained that the total shut down is a necessary precautionary measure to avoid a possible disaster due to the oil leak and that the Eskom’s technicians are currently working in it and doing tests.

He noted that the affected areas include both areas supplied by Eskom and City Power around Tembisa and Midrand including Rabid Ridge, Austin View, Mayibuye extensions and Commercia and that it is not known when the power will return but will communicate the information when it becomes available from Eskom.

On Wednesday, national power utility Eskom announced it had dispatched technicians to attend the Allandale substation.

As of Thursday morning, the fire is out and the power is back on according to City Power.
