USA’s GE wins contract for Shuqaiq 3 substation from ACCIONA

New York: New York Stock Exchange-listed (NYSE) GE’s grid solutions business, which is a part of its subsidiary GE Renewable Energy, has bagged a contract from Spanish firm ACCIONA to provide a 380/132 kV GIS substation that will power the Shuqaiq 3 desalination plant.

As part of the contract GE will provide designing, manufacturing, construction, and commissioning services in addition to supplying power transformers, grid automation and telecommunication systems that will complete the electricity connection in the Red Sea coastal city of Shuqaiq in the kingdom.

Developed by a consortium comprising ACCIONA, Marubeni, Abdul Latif Jameel Commercial Development Company, and Rawafid Alhadarah Holdig Company, the Shuqaiq 3 desalination plant will fulfil fresh water needs of more than 1.8 million people. The plant is expected to be completed in 2021.

Once complete, Shuqaiq 3 will be one of the world’s largest reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plants. It will produce 450,000 cubic meters of water that is enough to fill 180 Olympic-size swimming pools each day.
