Tranformer causes fire at Long Island substation
A fire erupted at a PSEG Long Island substation in Bridgehampton on the morning of 24 January. No injuries were reported and the fire was extinguished quickly.
USA: A fire erupted at a PSEG Long Island substation in Bridgehampton on the morning of January 24th. No injuries were reported.
A transformer vault at the substation at 1235 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike went up in flames at 10:50 a.m, according to Bridgehampton Fire Chief Mark Balserus. A worker on scene said the transformer was still energized and firefighters had to wait until the power was turned off to attack the fire.
“The PSEG rep on scene told us they were in the process of shutting it down so we could operate on the fire,” Chief Balserus said. It took at least 15 minutes for the power to be shut off, while heavy black smoke poured out of the substation
When firefighters were able to approach the substation, they extinguished the flames quickly.
Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike was shut down during the process.
Elizabeth Flagler, a spokeswoman for PSEG-Long Island, said no customer were affected and that the company is investigating what caused the fire.
