Australia, Sunshine Coast: A new substation on the Sunshine Coast will replace the 76-year-old complex on the corner of Landsborough-Maleny Road and Bunya Street at Maleny. The new $16.4 million project is set to include technology that will restore power to locals faster after outages. A Department of Energy spokesperson said the current hub required replacing due to ageing. The original substation was constructed in 1948 and is nearing the end of its functional life.

The new substation is being built in three stages, with the first stage already complete. The goal is to finish the whole project by mid to late 2027. This should provide significant benefits to locals, ensuring a safe and reliable power supply. The new substation will also be more visually appealing than the current open-air one and will include technology which will allow power to be restored much more quickly following any outages.

It was recently announced by the state government that the current substation would receive a $3.3 million upgrade “to avoid power disruption while the new substation is built”. These costs are part of the overall $16.4 million expenditure. During the upgrade, some planned outages might happen, but affected customers will be notified in advance.
