Backup transformers are generally stored outside and close to the active transformer so they can be put into use quickly when needed. Protective Packaging Corporation recently worked with a Texas power plant to preserve such backup transformer.

The transformer was stored on a concrete pad covered with a metal grate. However, the transformer was collecting dust and debris and, if outage occurs, the buildup could cause unnecessary time wasting.

Protective Packaging offered cost effective solution to protect the transformer without having to relocate or move it. A flexible material that attaches to the transformer was used as it does not peel or crack and it is suitable for the hot summers and occasional ice storms occuring in Texas, USA. The outdoor cover was attached to the transformers with straps and buckles.

“Once we had customer approval on the solution, we set to work to deliver their custom cover. The design consisted of several panels of UV proof ballistic nylon, designed to protect the transformer for at least 5 years,”said Protective Packaging Senior Vice President Jim Hiller. “Our team then manufactured the cover to specifications, and dispatched packaging professionals to install the cover. We used a crane to position the panels around the unit, and workers secured the panels by tying them together with nylon ropes and fastening the buckles. Then the cover was fastened to the grate under the transformer using bungee type cords,” he added.
