Austria, Vienna: Austrian Power Grid AG (APG) was able to start-up the new 380/220 kV transformer at the substation Lienz located in the town of Nußdorf-Debant.

It will improve the fail-safety of the electricity supply in all of Austria and facilitate the nationwide use of climate-friendly wind energy. The acquisition costs of $8.8 M (€7.5 M) are only a quarter or the total sum of investment allotted to the projects that APG is busy implementing at this particular location: with a total of $35.3 M (€30 M) Austria’s TSO will considerably improve the electricity supply in East Tyrol. The completion of the overall project is scheduled for the end of 2022.

“When such a large power transformer is switched on for the first time it is always an event full of suspense but we were very well prepared. Already three weeks before we had thoroughly checked and tested all safety-related instrumentation and control systems,” says Wolfgang Ranninger, the project manager responsible for coordinating the construction works.

A new 380/220 kV large power transformer (LPT) is one element of the mega-project. With its weight of 816 T, the state-of-the-art piece of equipment that has been installed at the substation Lienz is one of the largest of its kind. In Austria, this type of LPT is exclusively deployed by APG. Due to its enormous dimensions the colossus was delivered in three parts (so-called “transformer banks”) in the late summer of 2020. The state-of-the-art plant components were connected into a single working unit on 19 August 2021.
