Cambodia, Phnom Penh: Cambodia has announced that its power transmission network requires renovation, which will cost the country nearly $1.8 B.

The country has recently released its Power Development Plan 2022-2040, and accordingly, $816 M has already been committed for priority development projects for the period until 2025. However, a further $980 M will be required for the development of HV transmission networks, particularly the installation of 230 kV and 500 kV lines, transformers, reactive plants, series capacitors and resilience upgrades.

Cambodia’s development plan is supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and it consists of a transmission development plan for both grid security and reliability and provides an effective strategy for expanding the HV network to meet the growing power supply demand.

The country is also set to implement the National Energy Efficiency Policy aiming at cutting the total final energy consumption (TFEC) by 19 % by 2030, from 89,837 GWh to 72,470 GWh. The concept does not represent a plan of saving energy by reducing the country’s economic activity and overall productivity and comfort, but rather by using fewer energy inputs. The policy was prepared based on international best practices and considering the specific circumstances in Cambodia, including consumption trends, availability and affordability of energy-efficient technologies and required investments.
