Capreol substation gets a $1.6 M upgrade

Canada, Ontario, Sudbury: Greater Sudbury Utilities recently invested more than $1.5 M to upgrade and improve the Capreol municipal substation (MS32) on Railway Avenue.
The $1.6 M investment was made to upgrade and improve the substation, which was initially built in the late 1950s.
“I am proud to be a part of an organisation that continues to invest in important community infrastructure,” said GSU board chair Mark Signoretti. “Over the past 60 plus years, this substation has served the community well, but the equipment was tired, and the distribution system faces new challenges. This investment will ensure the community is able to accommodate future demands.”
The Capreol substation distributes power to more than 1,500 Greater Sudbury Hydro customers in the Capreol area and also houses Agilis Networks telecommunications equipment.
The renewal project replaced dated, end-of-life aerial equipment with new pad-mounted devices with capacity for the future. Automated control equipment was also installed, which enables remote operation of some functions.
GSU currently operates several substations that were built right after World War II, and plans to upgrade them in a phased, prioritised approach. Kathleen MS2 and Capreol MS32 have both been renovated in the past two years, whereas Gemmell MS11 is presently under construction, Cressy MS3 is scheduled for renovation in 2021 – with others to follow.
