Canada, Calgary: Canada Energy Regulator authorized the Hertel–New York interconnection line in order to supply clean hydroelectricity.

The Canada Energy Regulator (CER) has authorized a 58 km Hertel–New York interconnection line, which will link to the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) line. The Hertel–New York line, crossing an international border, was evaluated by the Commission of the Canada Energy Regulator.

The project will consist of a transmission line between Hertel substation in La Prairie and an interconnection point in the Riviere Richelieu at the Canada–U.S. border linking the CHPE line.

The commissioning of these installations is scheduled for May 2026. The two lines will supply clean hydroelectricity generated by Hydro-Quebec to New York City with a capacity of 1,250 MW and reduce the city’s carbon emissions by approximately 3.9 M metric tonnes per year, equivalent to eliminating 44 % of the cars circulating in New York City.
