Germany, Rhineland-Palatinate: Westnetz GmbH has expanded the Bekond substation with an SF6 -free 24 kV switchgear panel.

E.ON subsidiary Westnetz, one of the largest distribution network operators in Germany, has joined forces with Siemens Smart Infrastructure to expand the Bekond substation in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, with an NXPLUS C 24 switchgear panel that is free of fluorine gas. It is the first switchgear panel of this type in the world that goes into operation with the climate-neutral insulation gas Clean Air. With this installation, the functionality of fluorine gas-free solutions in network operation as well as the uncomplicated expansion of the existing technology with the latest environmentally friendly technology is shown.

“As a company, we are particularly impressed by the compatibility with the existing SF 6 system and the proven design and operating concept about the new Siemens product NXPLUS C 24, ” says Bastian Wölke, technical product manager for medium-voltage switchgear and systems at Westnetz GmbH.

“With our fluorine-gas-free switchgear, we enable our customers to operate sustainably and at the same time safely and economically,” says Stephan May, CEO of the Distribution Systems business unit at Siemens Smart Infrastructure. “The NXPLUS C base installed in over 130,000 fields can be expanded with the latest climate-neutral technology. The dimensions and usability of the system remain unchanged. This creates investment security for our customers and makes it easier to switch to sustainable fluorine gas-free technologies.”
