Colombia, Bogotá: Enel-Codensa put into operation Portugal, the first 100 % digital substation in Colombia.

This is an important milestone in modernization and innovation in the electricity sector, within the framework of the current energy transition. All the information on processes and operation in the substation is transmitted via fibre optics. In addition, it has technology and intelligent equipment, which allow it to make autonomous decisions and facilitate its operation.

The Portugal substation, located in Engativá, has a capacity of 40 MVA, and will be in charge of providing the energy for the operation of the Salitre Wastewater Treatment Plant, key work in the decontamination of the Río Bogotá. In addition, it will meet the growing power demand in western Bogotá, which is the main axis in the development of the city and surrounding municipalities.

For Francesco Bertoli, general manager of Enel-Codensa, said “Digitization is a path that we build every day, to provide a better service to our customers. In the Portugal Substation, the processes of acquisition of information in the field, supervision and control are completely digital, generating additional benefits in security, productivity and reliability of the information”.

Among other characteristics, Portugal has a simpler configuration, which implies that it has fewer points of failure and that modernization, expansion and future maintenance processes are optimized, which will imply fewer interruptions. Likewise, it has 80 % less use of copper cables, which means less electrical risk for workers. Finally, its construction is considered “cleaner”, due to less required works.
