USA, Dallas: EPRI and 6 leading utilities to demo SSP’s all-solid-state medium voltage transformer.

Solid State Power LLC (“SSP”) is excited to announce the start of a 5-month demonstration program of its all-solid-state medium voltage transformer (“SST”) for the distribution grid.

The project will be run and managed by EPRI with the participation of 6 of the largest and most innovative utilities in the US: Xcel, ConEdison, AEP, Southern Company, SCE, and NYPA. It will take place in EPRl’s Transmission and Distribution Test Facility in Lenox, MA.

The SST is an outdoor-rated, pole-mounted, single-phase unit rated at 25 kVA power level, with 7.2 kV AC primary and split 2 x 120 V AC secondary output. The unit’s configuration reflects the most common size in the distribution transformer market. The SST provides automatic voltage regulation +/- 10 % of the primary rating, addressing typical voltage spikes and sags in the distribution grid.

The testing program will focus on a number of areas, including load capability, voltage characteristics, efficiency, and thermal performance. The key objective of the program is to demonstrate the ability of the SST to operate outdoors under typical grid load profiles while also providing automatic voltage regulation, usually performed by separate hardware on the distribution lines.

Since the pandemic’s end, the US distribution transformer market has been experiencing acute shortages, longer lead times and increasing prices. Together with industry partners, SSP is progressing the commercialization of a cost-effective, next-generation transformer alternative for power operators.
