Germany, Leipzig: 50Hertz has inaugurated Europe’s largest solar power plant, the 650 MWp Witznitz Energy Park south of Leipzig. The plant was built over the past two years on a former lignite mining site covering a total area of roughly 500 hectares in the municipalities of Neukieritzsch, Böhlen and Rötha near the Hainer See.

According to the company, the project sends electricity directly at extra-high voltage while helping to maintain grid stability around the clock. It was built in multiple phases and has been injecting electricity into the grid since December 2023, but has only been working at full capacity for the past few weeks.

“By activating reactive power and incorporating the solar plant into our congestion management, we’re once again doing pioneering work to make as much electricity from renewable energies usable as the grid will allow,” CEO of 50Hertz Stefan Kapfere said.
