Portugal, Sines: Iberdrola and Prosolia Energy have announced securing approvals for the construction of Europe’s largest PV plant, fifth largest worldwide.

The site is located in Santiago do Cacém near Sines, in the Setúbal district. The Fernando Pessoa PV plant, named after the Portuguese poet, will generate clean energy for the annual needs of 430,000 households.

The solar farm will have a capacity of 1.2 GW, and is expected for commissioning in 2025. The companies have emphasized the project would help improve the ecosystem stability.

“This solar farm sets a new benchmark in combining Europe’s clean energy ambitions with the delivery of tangible environmental and social benefits,” said Iberdrola’s Executive Chairman Ignacio Galán.
