Giant crane replacing substation equipment

England, Chester: Members of the public were treated to a visual spectacle in Chester city centre as heavy electrical equipment was lifted in and out of a substation using a giant crane.
A temporary road closure was in place in Northgate Street on 30 July so the mobile crane could park on the bridge over the canal next to the Northgate.
The operation was to replace seven aging circuit breakers within a substation that sits high above the canal in a one-in-one-out exercise. It proved tricky because the crane driver was operating in a confined space next to the ancient walls with plenty of obstacles to avoid including trees.
A spokesperson for SP Energy Networks said, “As part of our $35 M (£30 M) investment programme in the Wirral District during 2020, our engineers are currently replacing seven circuit breakers – which are approaching their end of life at a substation in Northgate Street, Chester. ”
“The work involves the use of an enormous crane to lift equipment in and out of the site, which required a temporary road closure, and we are on track to fully complete the works early next week.
“Projects like this are key to keeping power flowing round the clock and we appreciate the patience and understanding of local people and businesses while we complete these essential works.”
