Zimbabwe, Harare: Two autotransformers intended for the Hwange B substation have arrived to the country, according to the source.

The transformers are essential for the transmission and distribution of electricity for Hwange 7 and 8 Expansion Project.

Situated in the North Western part of Zimbabwe, Hwange Power Station is the largest coal-fired power station with 920 MW installed capacity which comprises of 4 x 120 MW and 2 x 220 MW units. It is the 14th largest thermal station in the Southern African region and is adjacent to Wankie Colliery Open Cast Mine. The station was built in two stages. The 4 x 120MW units were commissioned between 1983 and 1986 and the 2 x 220 MW were commissioned in 1986 and 1987. All six units are available and the station currently generates about 40 % percent of the country’s electricity needs.

In August 2018, Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) officially commenced expansion works at Hwange Power Station which will result in a third stage being added to the station with 2 x 300 MW units being constructed. The expansion project will increase Hwange’s generation capacity from the current 920 MW to 1520 MW.

Three weeks ago Zimbabwe Power Company announced the start of the construction of transformer foundations for the Hwange Expansion Project, now the equipment has arrived.

This is expected to boost the country’s power generation and ease the loadshedding the country has been subjected to for long.

Zimbabwe has been facing energy crisis owing to breakdowns amid aged equipment.
