Canada, Ontario, Kitchener: Hydro One plans to spend $30 M on new infrastructure, it says will strengthen power reliability to distribution companies in Waterloo Region.

As part of the first stage of upgrades, a transformer from the 1950s has been replaced at the Detweiler Transmission Station in Kitchener.

Work has already started on the second stage, which will include replacing a second transformer at the site and modernizing protection equipment to better respond to outages.

“Communities and businesses are counting on Hydro One for safe and reliable power. Investments to the station, which energizes the Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph area, will keep the public safe and ensure power reliability to customers and businesses at a time when it is needed most,” David Lebeter, Chief Operating Officer, Hydro One said in a news release. “By upgrading the aging infrastructure in the region, we are modernizing the electricity system while building a better and brighter future.”

The chair of Waterloo Region calls it great news for the community, “Hydro One’s investment provides reliable, efficient and safe power to our homes and supports businesses at a time when economic recovery is critical. We are proud to work together in collaboration for our brighter future,” added Karen Redman.
