Spain, Madrid: Spanish utility Iberdrola SA has obtained the construction permit for the 101 MW El Escudo wind farm located in the autonomous community of Cantabria, in the north of Spain. The project was developed by local firm Biocantaber, in which Iberdrola’s Spanish arm has a stake.

The project will trigger an investment of €120 million (USD 130m), much of which will be allocated to the local value chain. It will be the first wind farm in Spain to apply building information modelling (BIM), allowing for detailed control over construction works and the application of measures to reduce the impact.

El Escudo will consist of 24 turbines installed across four municipalities. During the permitting process for the construction licence, one turbine was eliminated from the design, but could be brought back if archaeological surveys show that it would not affect a local archaeological dig.

The project faced legal challenges over the years, but the courts didn’t halt the drilling and rejected petitions to stop the whole project twice. Early construction works at the site have already begun.
