India, Idukki: Some parts of state experienced power cuts after electricity generation was stopped at Moolamattom power generation unit in Idukki on 12 August.

The problems have occurred due to technical snags in all the six generators at the plant, according to Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).

KSEB officials said the power generation was stopped around 7.30 p.m. and resumed partially by 9.30 p.m. after two generators started functioning.

Power cuts were imposed in various parts of the state but electricity supply was restored after the state received 400 MW power from outside sources. The sources said to reduce the water level in Idukki reservoir, KSEB has increased power generation to the plant’s maximum capacity over the last one and half months.

All six generators were generating 14-16 MU per day (average). The power generation in Moolamattom power plant on 11 August was at 14.695 MU.

The generators developed the technical snag due to ‘overuse’, the sources added.

In February this year, power generation was stopped at Moolamattom power plant after a major blast at the auxiliary system of the transformer during power generation.

The Moolamattom underground power station was commissioned in 1976 and generators 1, 2 and 3 were installed in the first phase and the remaining in the second phase.

The Moolamattom power house of the Idukki reservoir has an installed capacity of 780 MW with six generators of 130 MW each.
