USA, Connecticut: Engineering consultancy Kent was awarded the design contract for the offshore substation for Avangrid Renewables’ Park City Wind project.

The project will provide 804 MW of offshore wind power to the state of Connecticut. Kent has now completed the conceptual design of the jacket foundation and topside structure. Kent delivered the concept design for the offshore electrical substation following recent work with the Iberdrola Group, which owns Avangrid, on East Anglia Hub and Baltic Eagle.

“Continuing our relationship with the Iberdrola Group and supporting projects within the US is a key focus for Kent’s Engineering and Consulting business. The concept design builds on the long-standing offshore substation capabilities within Kent. It reinforces our commitment to the US offshore wind market, which our team in Houston has served well for many years, and is further strengthened by the recent appointment of a US Market Lead based in Boston. This project is the fourth concurrent project in our portfolio of work which shows the quality of the relationship we’ve built with the client and places us in the supply chain for their three current European developments and Avangrid Renewables’ Park City Wind project. We look forward to supporting the client in their next stage of offshore windfarms being built in the US to tackle climate change and meet Net Zero targets,” said Ceri-Anne Cummings, Market Director and Project Director, Offshore Wind at Kent.

Kent is one of the leading providers of engineering and design services to the global offshore wind industry, having been involved in over 11 GW of fixed and floating offshore wind projects, and sees major potential growth markets for this technology in the USA. In January 2022, Avangrid Renewables announced the completion of the restructuring of its existing Vineyard Wind joint venture to become the largest offshore wind supplier in New England.

Avangrid Renewables has a projected offshore wind pipeline of 5.3 GW on the East Coast of the United States – enough to power more than two million households. In addition to Commonwealth Wind and its 50 % stake in the first-in-the-nation Vineyard Wind 1 project (800 MW total), Avangrid owns 100 % of Park City Wind (804 MW to Connecticut) and Kitty Hawk Offshore Wind (2,500 MW off the coast of North Carolina).
